Concerning DVD playback, is/was/were there any functional changes between
VLC 0.8.6 and 0.9.x as regards the Intel versus PPC Mac software?

Ken,

your old Mac's DVD drive allowed VLC to work-around your DVD's region  
lock. This is impossible with current drives, so you are locked to the  
actual region setting of your drive, which you need to set once with  
Apple's DVD Player application. Regrettably, there is no way to work- 
around that except to get an external drive and set it to a different  
region than your internal one.
There is no functional change between VLC 0.8.6 and 0.9.x concerning  
DVD playback.
