[vlc] 0.9.4 and raw1394

Which distribution?

Is /dev/raw1394 readible for the user that runs vlc?

Are the firewire kernel modules loaded?

Did you lower the default caching value for dv? It is set to 60 seconds 
by default. Change to eg: --dv-caching 1000
