Windows: Direct X? Video For Windows ? QuickTime? WinAMP ? other ?
Linux: mplayer ? Xine ? GStreamer ? KDE? other ?

i used to thinkl of VLC as of self-contained program with almost no  
interest in other programs,

What are those native system codecs, that VLC is enabled to use ?
