My present setup has:-  (host is PC -AMDcpu  _linux 64bit  (not multilib)  
kernel 2.6.27.7 gcc4.3.2)

You can tune the compiler flags in vlc-config.
To build vlc and its plugins, type `./compile' or `make'.
