[vlc] Playback issue between 8.6 and 9.8a

VLC Developers:

 

In 8.6 the playlist plays back by pausing the video that is playing and
starts the next clip without a black frame or two playing.

In 9.8a the black frames have appeared between the clips playing back.

Is this a setting in preferences? Or has the source code changed to alter
playback between clips? 

If it has changed, is there a way to set it back to the 8.6 scheme.

We are playing back HD-AVC and AVI files together in the same playlist.
