[vlc] problems

Gentlemen (and ladies!)

Vista Home Premium

I have used VLC  more than happily for years. I installed 9.9 - NO SOUND. I tried 1.0. NO SOUND! What to do?

Also Is there some way that video settings can be preserved for next time the program is used?
