[vlc] VLC/Griffin Firewave

I recently installed a Griffin Firewave on my iMac.

When playing a video file (such as a DVD) using VLC, I have 3 choices
for my Audio Device:

Griffin FireWave Surround (0904)
Griffin FireWave Surround (0904) (Encoded Output)
Built-In Output

Obviously, Built-In Output is the speakers contained in the iMac.
Selecting this method results in sound coming through the speakers in
the iMac. OK.

Additionally, the Griffin FireWave Surround (0904) output works.
Selecting this output results in sound coming through my surround
sound system. However the Griffin FireWave indicates (via a light on
the front) that this is *not* a Dolby encoded output. Listening to
the output would seem to support this assertion. Not desirable.

When I select the Griffin FireWave Surround (0904) (Encoded Output)
the Griffin Firewave indicates (via a light on the front) that the
output is now Dolby encoded. However, no sound comes from the
speakers while the file is playing. Again, not desirable.

Please advise.
