[vlc] Cannot enqueue

On Kubuntu 8.04 with VLC 0.9.8a I configure VLC to [X] use a single
instance, and to [X] enqueue when new files are opened. However, when
I open another file it opens another instance of VLC. Looking in the
options, I see that [X] use a single instance is still checked, but []
enqueue is not! So I set it again, but when a new instance of VLC is
opened (whether or not the current instance is closed) that confounded
checkmark is missing. And why is it opening new instances in the first
place?
