Probably never.

For one thing, gstreamer is based on the abomination widely known as
GObject.

Using GObject from C code looks more like insanity than reason to me.

FreeDesktop.org is making influenced choices.

If you look at the members and sponsors of FDO, you'll notice a few
companies with very vested interest in "their" technologies, such as
gstreamer. For marketing purpose, it is very convenient for them to pretend
gstreamer is "THE" open-source multimedia framework. It is oh so convenient
to exclude the other frameworks and pretend they don't exist. Nevermind
that there is ffmpeg, xine-lib, libvlc, and I don't know what else too.
