[vlc] Displaying date/time stamp

Hi
I am trying to use VLC to assess some behaviour videos - recorded on sony digital handycams as .MPG (mpeg2 I think). The camera apparently automatically records the date/time information into the movie clip.
I need to know how to display this date/time stamp/information. I have tried switching on the on screen display/subtitles under preferences.
OS - windows XP pro SP3
VLC player version 1.0.3
