[vlc] HELP Please...

I have been all over the internet including your forums and Microsoft's
website.  I have an Excel 2003 worksheet with hyperlinks to movie files
(.avi & .mp4).  I have the file associations for these set to VLC, but I get
the error "No program is registered to open this file" when I click on the
hyperlinks.
 
I cannot figure this out - can you please help?
 
I am running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3.
