Did you already update to VLC 1.1.1 and the 10.7 ATI drivers (released earlier this week) to enable hardware decoding support? This will greatly speed-up VLC.

Regrettably, hardware acceleration is not yet available for machines with Intel Graphics, so this isn't an option for your other PC.
