[vlc] mp4 files and repeat play

How do I get VLC to play mp4 files and how do I get it to automatically repeat play whenever I start it up (without having to click on the repeat option every time)? I have searched through the preferences area and found nothing, but I know it can do this as I set something somewhere before and it did. However, I since had to uninstall/reinstall the player and now it won't.

What did I change? I can't find anything in your documentation about this, which is strange because I would have thought it would be a fairly basic option.
