[vlc] moving VLC videos to ipod nano

Hi,   I was able to upload my P90X work out videos to my Mac using VLC and they appeared to convert to MP4s. I am able to watch them on my Mac and move them to itunes.  But when I try to sync them to my iphone 4 or my Ipod Nano (4th gen), itunes says it can't play this format on either of my devices?  I thought Iphone and ipod nano can play mp4 format?  Did I not convert the videos correctly?
