[vlc] problem with vlc

Hi,
Everytime I start vlc it shows me a messsage box saying "rebuilding font
cache". This message never seems to disappear even though I've tried to let
it take its time for hours on end. This problem started after I "upgraded"
from vlc 1.1.2 to vlc 1.1.4 and the problems been persistent. VLC used to be
the best, easiest to use, most powerful yet light software out there. What
happened?
