I don't have a problem with renaming 'core' to 'common'.

Agreed that it's ugly. I'll fix it.

You mean like 'core/mc.c' vs 'core/i386/mc.c'? (In which case there are 
also clashes between core, encoder, and decoder.) I fail to see the 
problem.
