You might be interested to know about MSU's H.264 codec comparison
(can't find a better working link than

the latest comparison should be out in a few weeks (days?)
and include x264.

I'm pretty sure its already quite patent encumbered. However,
patents don't (shouldn't) matter in non-commercial use.
