I had a student add a similar capability to x264 a while back. I've 
attached the resulting patch
that allows the user of x264 to specify the reference pattern via an 
array. It is not a
particularly nice patch but I think it will help you understand where to 
make your changes to
get what you want.
It is also an old patch so you may not be able to simply apply it to the 
current git version.
