Hi tom,

thanks for giving it a try.

Unfortunately MPEG-DASH is currently not supported on iOS, so you are right
that's currently a problem. For them, you still have to generate HLS.

Some words on HLS: HLS is a proprietary format controlled by one company,
without good DRM support, with some problems on Android and with no native
HTML5 support.

And now switch to DASH: international and vendor independent format, with
broad industry support (see www.dash-if.org),  support for multiple DRM
formats (via MPEG-CENC and HTML5 EME), native HTML5 support via the HTML5
MSE, flexibility for live streaming incl. timeshift, catchup, etc. and it's
the only adaptive streaming format in HbbTV 1.5.

I hope that helps to understand why we see MPEG-DASH as the format of
choice for the future. But of course, HLS is also a fine solution for a lot
of use cases, so please don't get this wrong :-)
