While I agree that bpp is potentially confusing, I think that bpc would be
more confusing. For video technologies, bits per sample is used more often
than bits per channel.
For what it's worth, the HEVC specifications don't refer to bpp, bpc or bps.
They refer only to bit depth.
With respect to our online documentation, we don't need to abbreviate these
terms. We can clear up any potential confusion by adding "bits per color
sample", or by referring to the 8 bit or high bit depth x265 libraries.

Yes, it's confusing, in the display context it means all three channels
combined.
