Maybe we could writeup a small INSTALL.macosx for the distrib, that 
would explain
the necessary steps, like installing your /local hierarchy etc etc ?

Which brings one question, I use the followind configure options:
./configure --disable-gtk --enable-ffmpeg

but, are those necessary ?
