But how do you define a codec? See AAC with so many variants, with the same fourcc, because it is more extensions.

But you can, so if we follow your reasoning, it is the same codec.
DTS-Express is a different codec, because it is totally different. Same for DTS-X.
But DTS-HD-HRA and DTS-HD-MA share the DTS-Core and adds extension, so it's very not clear that this is a different codec.
