DVD->Mac->IEE1394->sony converter->TV, will vlc do this?

Folks,
   I would love to be able to play DVD's on a Mac G4 Cube running MacOS 10.1 and
have the output (digital video, i.e. uncompressed MPEG) sent over 
Firewire to a Sony
box that converts to/from analog and digital video.  I can do it with iMovie
just fine, but need a DVD player that can select the video output 
deivce other than
just the screen (iMovie will not read DVDs).  So can vlc do so?
