I literally couldn't tell you. But I can guess.

Install from RPMs. I have a Mandrake system.

The reason for my first paragraph is, I have been running VLC since something
like 0.2.60 (earlier?) and I know for a fact I've gone through many iterations
of installation, removal, etc, including at some points running from CVS.
