   Because it can't do otherwise, vlc is using software YUV rendering,
which is always slow.

   You should have a look at the XVideo extension for XFree86. See if
your X version supports it (you need 4.0 at least), and see if your
video card is supported. If XVideo is available, vlc will use a lot less
CPU.
