Vlc speed

The best video output module, in terms of speed and quality of the display is 
xvideo. But Xvideo is not supported by all graphics cards, so you may not be 
able to use it. You can also stick to the sdl output module as it will use 
the best possible display method available on your system (Xvideo or x11). 
(Personnaly I don't really like the fact that sdl changes the resolution of 
the screen when you switch to fullscreen).

Otherwise, you don't really have anything to tweak to get the best 
performance out of vlc, because vlc will choose the best modules (video 
output, motion compensation, yuv, idct, imdct...) for your computer.

So for the best performance, you should check that your system (XFree 4) 
supports the Xvideo extension.
