vlc playing dvd problems on debian

I found regionset in
http://www.linuxtv.org/download/dvd/dvd_disc_20000215.tar.gz
type 'make regionset' and './regionset /dev/dvd'

I used that to set the region in the DVD device.  I then could play DVDs
from oms, http://www.linuxvideo.org/oms/data/debian/ .  oms plays the
DVDs with audio 1/2 second behind the video :(.
  Strangely enough vlc and xine don't work any better.
