playing encrypted dvd

HELP

i have an ibm a30 dvd/cdrom combo
i downloaded the latest tarball 
ran ./configure
ran make
ran make install
loaded vlc
selected disc
get error no suitable access plugin for dvd/:/dev/dvd at 1,1
i have enabled dma
i have linked -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd
i have linked -s /dev/raw/raw1 /dvd/rdvd 
i chmod 777 /dev/hdc
i chmod 777 /dev/dvd
what am i missing
when i mount the dvd -t udf and load the file in vlc
i get the drive to spin up....and the time bar starts moving...
interupted audio, and no video...
