Hi,

this is not enough to diagnostic your problem. Please feel free to
attach your vlc logfile to your mail.
Concerning your dvd drive, you no longer need to mount the dvd before
reading it.
This is a typical line you can use to play dvd by mapping the device:
vlc --vout xvideo dvd:/dev/dvd at 1,1

This will normally open an output window and render into it the content
of the main track.
