Help! I'm using the vlc 0.2.83 package shipped with Mandrake 8.1 and have installed
libdvdcss from the libdvdcss1-1.0.0-1mdk.i586.rpm binary. The client itself works with
the presentation_short.vob file, so it is correctly installed. My dvd drive is a Pioneer
DVD-106S installed as /dev/hdd with a link to /dev/dvd. I've been unable to get this
installation to work and have run out of things I know how to try. Here's the output I get when
trying to start the client with -vvvvvv option:

I suspect a write permission problem, and have tried to chmod /dev/hdd accordingly, but can't
get it to work. The devfs documentation is way over my head. Here's partial output from
a /dev listing:

Can anyone either point me toward some HOW-TO documentation suitable for a beginner to intermediate level
user, or tell me flat out what I need to do? Thanks.
