You will see this method of distribution a lot with MacOS X applications.
Most programs are distrubuted on an diskimage and require you to drag and
drop the application into /Applications.
Mabye this should be in the MacOS X Read This First file. Checking CVS from
15 may I see that this file is outdated. When I have finished breakfast I
will update it.

Not at all. That is the whole point of the 0.4.0 release. Making it a REAL
MacOS product.

Oke, the box was the "Terminal" application. You can best compare this to a
DOS-prompt. It gives you access to the underpinnings of MacOS X. Because in
previous releases the applications possibilities exceeded the options that
were available from the User Interface, these directions were needed to
perform certain duties.
The "Terminal" should not be necesarry anymore if you want to use the 0.4.0
release of VideoLan.
And you could not make any valid commands, because you had not installed the
application.
