[vlc] frame seeking

Hello, all ...

Wouldn't it be nice if VLC had something like:

input_Seek( p_input, i_new_pos, INPUT_SEEEK_IFRAME | INPUT_SEEK_SET );

... or INPUT_SEEK_GOP or something like this?  I'm looking into implementing this, but, though i'm 
somewhat familiar with the VLC source now, i'm by no means an expert, and am wondering what 
level of VLC code understands what an I-frame / GOP is, and how far removed it is from the 
input_ext iface.  Any ideas or thoughts on where to look?
