I can at least tell you that the avi doesn't play because the ffmpeg plugin 
wasn't compiled. With VLC 0.5.3 you need to ./configure with 
--enable-ffmpeg and --with-ffmpeg-tree=../ffmpeg/
If you try to compile VLC 0.6.0, you can omit the --enable-ffmpeg as it is 
enabled by default.
