[vlc] Poor MPEG1 playback audio quality

I am running vlc 0.5.1 client on two XP machines.
 
On one client when I playback an MPEG1 I get good audio & video quality.
 
On the other I get good video and poor audio (ie. scratchy). Windows Media Player plays this file fine on both machines.
 
MPEG2 audio and video from a file source is also fine on both machines with VLC.
 
Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?
