[vlc] only remote control interface works

hello

i want to watch dvd with vlc and i have compiled the following on my Suse 8.2 
LInux machine

vlc-0.6.2
a52dec
libdvbpsi-0.1.3
libdvdcss-1.2.8
mpeg2dec-20030612

now when i type vlc, i get the message

VideoLAN Client 0.6.2 Trevelyan
remote control interface initialized, `h' for help

the command
add /dev/dvd 
starts playing the dvd and everything seem to be ok

but how can i get an other interface (gtk-interface for example)
Do i need to download any more sorce-code , or can i get an other interface 
maby with additional parameters to the vlc command?
