I committed a fix for this and it will be included in this evening's binary 
snaphot.
By default, the video capture device will be opened in I420 chroma mode (if 
available). You can change this by using the ":chroma=fourcc" option (eg. 
for fourcc: RV24).
There is also a ":size=" option which follow the same syntax as the v4l 
input (widthxheight, or sif, cif, etc...)
So a full command line could be for instance:
vlc.exe -vvv dshow://vdev="Genius VideoCAM":adev="ESS Maestro":size=cif
