BTW- Is there an x-code ready VLC source project available?  Apple 
receintly posted an article on using Shark for performance 
optimization.  They used Celestia as an example.  It was kind of fun to 
toy around with it an see where the bottlenecks were and how to smooth 
them out:

I wouldn't mind trying out a few things.  I've got the same laptop as 
Galen and a firewire connection to a HDTV receiver to pull some 
streams.
