Hi Anne,
VLC should read your DVD flawlessly from an external drive. The only 
problem is that your processor might not be fast enough to decode it, 
but just try it out. From my experience, a 500 MHz G3-iMac is just fast 
enough. On slower ones, you'll most likely experience choppy video, 
i.e. dropped images. In any case, you shouldn't run any large 
applications while playing DVDs.
