I did some tests with VLC 0.7.2 (0.7.1 is supposed not to support 
source-specific multicast, iirc) under a Linux 2.6 kernel, and ethereal was 
showing IGMPv3 messages, as expected. (see 
http://www.via.ecp.fr/via/ml/vlc/200406/msg00068.html and 
http://www.via.ecp.fr/via/ml/vlc/200406/msg00069.html (PS : Linux kernel 
actually sometimes sux when seveal UDP (multicast) streams are using the same 
port number, thanks to Claudio Cavalera ;).

But even receiving IGMPv2 messages, an IGMPv3-aware router is supposed to 
translate them to IGMPv3 messages (as described in RFC-3376, section 7.3.2).
Are you sure your router is sending good PIM-SSM messages to its neighbors and 
is receiving correspounding multicast streams ?
