[vlc] playing subtitle file

Hello
I have a little subtitle file.

Can I play it with vlc without the full file ?

The extension the file has is .pes
if I try to play it by open->file->myfile.pes
I get immeadiately the message:
[00000174] main input: EOF reached
[00000174] access_file input: closing `file/myfile.pes'

any idea?
