I don't know about vlc support, but Matrox dual-head cards are
usually pretty good. nVidia makes some decent ones. Many people
have reported much greater satisfaction from a dedicated dual-head
card, rather than trying to run mismatched individual video adapters.
Usually the dedicated cards have at least some of the co-ordination
performed by circuitry, and the rest by well-designed drivers, which
beats having the operating system trying to get the best out of a
mismash of unrelated video components.
At the office, I've got a PNY dual-head that's based on the nVidia
Quadro 1300, running with Win XP Pro, and it's mostly good, but
I get assorted glitches with the SereneScreen aquarium screensavers
(known to be moderately demanding).
I'll be finding out this week if said glitches are in fact a power-supply
problem (the video card says it needs a power-supply that's perhaps
a little ooomphier than the lowest-bidder unit currently in my DELL.
The only other fellow in my office with a dual-monitor setup also had
video and system glitches until he upgraded to a real power supply,
and then everything ran smoothly.... something that other folks might
consider if they are using high-demand video cards or combos.
