Maybe you should recompile your wxWidgets libraries to support Unicode.
wxWidgets wiki has great amount if information about ways to compile its 
libraries.
I happen to read sometimes vlc maling list, i've never build vlc myself 
but i'vec checked the code.
I think you need to compile a Unicode/static version of wxWidgets in 
order to make the wxgui module to work.
But maybe i'm also wrong here as static is not the solution.
You should also check the Makefile in the wxWidgets gui module folder.
