[vlc] xinit running vlc

Hi;

i am trying to run vlc using the xinit command from shell. (xinit vlc file_name -- xorg ... ). my problem is that when vlc starts running i got no keyboard control (even the leds are off), and only the mouse operates.  
a wierd thing, is that if i hit the '2' key the connection to xserver is lost and vlc stops running. why only this key is functioning?
