[vlc] vmem-pitch?

Hi,
I'm unsure about how to use the vmem-pitch argument of the vmem output
module. If I use the values as given in the SDL example (320x200, and a
pitch of 640), it works. But my source is 480x480 which I want to be
resized. Various combinations of the parameters lead to different
results but none give me the correct ratio or expand to the full size of
the video buffer.
I might be very naive here, but what am I missing? What should be the
pitch value anyway? It seems to be a number a bytes until next row, but
I'm not entirely sure.
Thanks for any input,
