[vlc] How to convert a mpg file to avi?

Dear Sir,
 
I have been using the VLC media player version 0.9.8a for some time  and it 
works great - thank you!
 
But, each time I click on Check for Updates I get the following error  
message: An error occurred while checking for updates.  Is this a bug or  because 
I'm using Internet Explorer?
 
Also, how do I convert an mpg file to an avi file that will not cost me too  
much and works on my DIVX/DVD player?
 
There are several so called free programs but they turn out to be timed  
conversions, so after awhile you lose either the video or the audio aspect  of the 
converted file.
