VLC's next major release will include a media database which should be able to do exactly this kind of stuff. It will be released later this spring.

For now, it's probably best to use the existing media library (with a similar, but limited feature set) or to create playlists for the appropriate albums.

However, note that VLC is mostly suited for video playback, so there may be more audio optimized applications available.
